We released our first code generator back in 2001 and within a matter of weeks, pirate versions begain to appear, and we have committed resources to increased security measures and finding ways to de-activate pirate copies. However, due in part to the recent debate on SOPA and PIPA we have now changed our view of piracy, and come up with a radical idea which could actually increase our revenue.

Our CEO John W. King explained the new policy "When assessing the impact of piracy many people seem to assume that every illegal download is a lost sale. In fact I believe that the vast majority of these downloads are by people who would never purchase our software either because they can't afford it or can't justify the cost - e.g. students, hobbyists, and people in low wage countries".

He continued "Apeel PHP Code Generator Pro has taken over 1,000 man hours to develop so giving it away for free to everyone isn't an option, but I realised that if someone likes our software enough to want a copy but cannot afford it, the simple answer is to ask them to write an article or make a video about why they like it - we get free publicity, they get a legitimate license without the risk of trawling virus and porn laden pirate sites".

The key to the idea is the belief that people who use our software for professional purposes will still prefer the quick and easy traditional route of purchasing with their credit card (which in turn helps us pay our bills and ensures we are around to develop new features and support users), whilst people who genuinely can't afford or can't justify the cost will take up the free option. We aim to publish the results of the experiment at the end of March.

There are of course many PHP code generators on the market but we believe that our time saving auto-detection features, object oriented-code and extensible framework and features such as desktop-like resizable data grids, and extensive filtering options make it stand out from the crowd.

Our CEO John W. King explained "Supposing you have a film table which links to a directors table. If you have to manually select the lookup table, the connected fields and the display field then it starts to negate the time saving benefits of a code generator, particularly if you are dealing with a large database with hundreds of links. We studied hundreds of real world databases to develop an algorithm which can usually automatically detect all the lookup settings even if you haven't set up foreign keys. It even does some artificial intelligence to clean up the label so that it shows Director instead of Director_ID for example. Instead of using an established framework we decided to develop our own open-source Apeel Framework. John W. King explained "We looked at all the established frameworks but we wanted one without a steep learning curve, that was easy to break-out of and didn't try to hide the power of SQL by forcing you to use some middleware. Since we couldn't find one that ticked all our boxes we decided to write our own framework using the MVC (Model View Controller) Design Pattern, and using established open-source libraries to do the heavy lifting to ensure reliability and that skills learned via the Apeel Framework were transferrable to non-Apeel projects."
